Katnook Estate is one of the most esteemed domains in Australia's premier red wine district, Coonawarra. It's vineyards are planted in prime Terra Rossa soil, spanning 330 hectares in the heart of this remote region of South Australia. From here come red wines that have contributed to Coonawarra's international reputation. Chief Winemaker, Wayne Stehbens, has been with Katnook since its first vintage in 1980, making him one of Australia's longest serving winemakers. During this time Wayne has been honoured with two Jimmy Watson Trophies which articulate Katnook Estate's status.
Wayne Stehbens is Katnook Estate's Senior Winemaker. He has presided over the wines and growth since 1980. Wayne's experience with the idiosyncrasies of the region and its terroir, along with his expertise with the best of new and traditional techniques have helped shape the wines in his charge. Wayne is known for his relaxed style and typically Australian sense of humour as well as his deep passion for wine and the Coonawarra wine district. Wayne's winemaking talent has been recognized in the form of many influential awards including two Jimmy Watson Trophies (1987 and 1998) and two major trophies from the prestigious UK based 2003 International Wine and Spirit Competition (Best Vintage Red Wine of the Year and Best Australian Red Wine).
