Wine of the Week
Chateau Moulin de La Lagune 2003
10 July 2007

GRAPE VARIETIES: Cabernet, Merlot, Cab-Franc, Petit-Verdot

GROWING REGION: Haut-Medoc, Bordeaux

HEAD WINEMAKER: Caroline Frey

TASTING NOTE:

Thankfully, this wonderful estate, which provided me with such a memorable visit and tasting experience last year in September, has rebounded from a period of several quiet years in the 90's.

The 2003, 2004 and 2005 offerings from La Lagune are the finest back-to-back vintages they have produced in over fifteen years. Credit must go to the Frey family, who also purchased the Rhone Valley flagship estate of Paul Jaboulet-Aine in 2006.

Caroline Frey, is the oenologist (winemaker) at Chateau La Lagune. This sexy, up-front, evolved 2003 La Lagune exhibits a dark ruby/ purple hue as well as big nose of cedar, spice box, black cherry jam, liquorices, and smoke. Savoury, broad, ripe, and low in acidity, it is a total sensual and intellectual turn-on. It is undoubtedly the finest La Lagune I have tried in several years - Treat yourself.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:

Drinking well now and over the next 8-10 years.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:

Perfect partner to Duck Confit, Lamb-Shanks or just an open fire.

91 points - The Wine Enthusiast.
