Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Grigio
Growing Region: Valdadige DOC, Italy
President: Count Marzotto
TASTING NOTE:
In 1961, the winemaker at Santa Margherita had what proved to be a brilliant idea. He decided to try the white vinification technique used for the production of French Champagne on the best Pinot Grigio grapes from Trentino-Alto Adige. This led to the creation of an innovative white wine which, with its fresh aroma and silky taste, created a new fashion in white wine drinking in northern Italy.
This wine has continued to gain in popularity both in Italy and abroad, maintaining a clear leadership in the Pinot Grigio DOC category in the US. Santa Margherita is the No.1 requested imported wine and the No.1 Pinot Grigio in fine dining restaurants in the US.
Santa Margherita was the first company to vinify the pinkish Pinot Grigio grapes as white wine. The 'must' is not left on the skins to avoid it acquiring any of it's their grey-red colour. After soft-pressing the 'must' is left to ferment for 15-20 days at 18-20C. The wine is then stored at 15-16C in special stainless-steel tanks until bottling.
The wine is a pale straw-yellow in colour. The nose is clean, with an intense aroma and dry flavour of pleasant golden apple that linger on the finish, which makes Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio a wine of subtle character and versatility. Serve at approx 10-12C.
