Wine of the Week
Montes 'Classic Series' Malbec 2007
20 April 2009

Grape Variety: 100% Malbec

Growing Region: Colchagua Valley, Chile

Winemaker: Aurelio Montes

TASTING NOTE:
For many a 100% Malbec is still a new and rare experience, but one I promise you will want to revisit time and time again. When you get ripe Malbec like the wine in this bottle from Montes in Chile, it is a pleasure to enjoy and share with a good meat dish at any time of the year.

The grapes are from vines that are close to 100 years old in the well reputed Colchagua valley. This exciting and ever so approachable wine has had oak aging for six months in American oak. Then before bottling the wine has gone through an earth and pad filtration. In the glass you have a rich deep ruby colour. The bouquet is full and round, showing a soft and generous red wine with a strong spicy character. Its powerful and elegant flavours showcase cherry and blackberry hints accompanied by floral notes that last inviting you to taste.

On the palate you have a wonderful butterscotch taste and a slight spiciness, totally integrated with the subtle vanilla notes provided by the oak ageing. This is a medium to full-bodied wine, with ripe and voluptuous tannins which are well integrated into the mid-palate and a long and very enjoyable finish. Best served at 17 to 18C.

Drinking perfectly well now, and over the next 3-4 years.
