Wine of the Week
Brookfields Hawke's Bay Rose 2008
09 December 2008

Grape Variety: 99% Merlot, 1% Cabernet

Growing Region: Hawke's Bay

Chief Winemaker: Peter Robertson

TASTING NOTE:
The 2008 vintage benefited from good late summer heat, even though it was an El Nino weather pattern. The Merlot for this wine was grown on Morley Road, adjacent to the Hastings city boundary. October frosts in 2007 delayed vine and canopy growth; hence the grapes were not harvested until late April.

The grapes were harvest and then crushed into stainless steel tank. After twenty hours of skin contact, the free run juice was drained off. Fermentation was at 13.5C. Due to a small portion of the colour dropping out with the yeast fermentation, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon juice was added, thus generating a unique Rose hue.

The resulting wine has a bright raspberry colour. This 2008 Rose has some delightful sweet notes, almost like boiled lollies in a candy store. On the palate most appealing are the ripe raspberry and strawberry flavours, that excite, refresh and linger for some time on the palate. Given the chance, this 2008 Rose will age, but why wait to enjoy something drinking so well now and designed to be enjoyed on hot summer days with good food and friends, serve chilled.
