GRAPE VARIETIES: 96.5% Shiraz & 3.5% Viognier
GROWING REGION: Marananga, Koonunga, Moppa and Greenock vineyards in the Barossa, Australia.
HEAD WINEMAKER: David Powell
TASTING NOTE:
This 2004 Run Rig comes from vines that range from 80 to 140 years of age. The old bush vine Shiraz is blended sublimely with a delicate touch of Viognier, complementing the strengths and complexities of these individual parcels of fruit from the 4 vineyard sites, whilst giving the resulting wine another dimension.
The colour is deep and rich with an enchanting nose of opulent blackberry, blueberry and redcurrant. Plus hints of violets, spice, chocolate, liquorice, BBQ'd meats, coffee and well judged oak.
The wine displays fantastic richness and concentration, textured and weighty across the palate, everything is in balance. All of these characters simply melt in your mouth and all held together with those trademark Torbreck tannins.
There is plenty of under-lying structure for improvement in the cellar, thanks to bright acidity, a core of fantastic fruit and a finish that lingers for at least a fortnight. Superb old vine expression.
CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Approachable now for the adventurous among you, but will be superb drinking from 2010 right through until 2020.
SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
Partner with wild game, rich dishes and decanter for at least 1 hour.
The 2001, 2002 & 2003 all received 99/ 100, this is even better!
