Wine of the Week
Torbreck 'Woodcutter's' Shiraz 2006
12 August 2008

Grape Variety: 100% Shiraz

Growing Region: Sourced from 6 small sites in the Barossa

Chief Winemaker: David Powell

TASTING NOTE:
The name 'Woodcutter's' stems from David Powell's several years spent working as a lumberjack in the Torbrecks forest in the Scottish Highlands. This wine reflects the best of old and young Shiraz vineyards of the Barossa.

Like all wines in the Torbreck stable, the fruit is sourced from hand harvested and hand tended plots throughout the Northwestern Barossa Valley. It is fermented in Torbreck's open cement vats for 6-7 days and then gently basket pressed to well seasoned hogsheads and French oak foudres for 12 months. It is bottled without the use of either fining or filtration.

The palate is dense, rich and opulent; this wine combines great fruit purity with texture, complexity and finesse, which is a rarity found at this price. Whilst offering immense pleasure in its youth the 2006 Woodcutter's Shiraz will no doubt develop along a similar path to the famed 2002 & 2004 vintages with a few years in the cellar. If you haven't had the pleasure yet to sample this expression of old vine Shiraz from David Powell, you will be hooked for the rest of your life when you do. Simply great drinking.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:

Drinkable now, yet with a constitution to mature in the cellar for another 5-6 years. *(Limited)

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:

This wine pairs well with a good hearty winter meal after a good days work, enjoy.
