Wine of the Week
Chapel Hill Shiraz/ Grenache 2005
29 July 2008

Grape Varieties: 90% Shiraz, 10% Grenache

Growing Region: McLaren Vale, Australia

Chief Winemaker: Michael Fragos

TASTING NOTE:
Shiraz and Grenache are undisputedly the two grape varieties that epitomise the unique personality and character of McLaren Vale. The 2005 vintage was a balanced growing season of hot dry periods and cooler days, resulting in ripe fruit with good varietal characters and fresh flavours. The grapes for this wine were sourced from vines aged between ten and forty years old. The various vineyard parcels were fermented separately to ensure each parcel was harvested at its optimum potential with regards to fruit and tannin development.

The grapes were gently crushed and then fermented on skins for 8 days to allow a long slow gentle extraction. The wine was then matured in a mix of French and American oak to add further complexity, mouth feel and to ensure that the pure varietal flavours are nurtured and preserved.

The bouquet has an opulently flavoured plum and cinnamon Shiraz backbone and is perfectly enhanced by the rustic earthy tones of the Grenache. The palate culminates in a multi layered wine that reveals itself after each new mouthful and has an exquisite lingering finish.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking well now - and developing nicely over the next 3-5 years.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
Perfect with slow roasted Lamb and Moroccan spice, also rich pasta sauces.
