Wine of the Week
Hewitson 'Ned & Henry's' Shiraz 2006
01 July 2008

Grape Varieties: 100% Shiraz

Growing Region: Old Bush Vines, Barossa, Australia

Chief Winemaker: Dean Hewitson

TASTING NOTE:
These vineyards are located in the best site not only in Australia, but possibly the world. Grown on red soil over limestone, the classic terra rossa provides the fruit for this Ned & Henry's. These vineyards are traditionally bush, dry-grown, low cropped and produce the necessary flavours and tannins for this outstanding wine.

The wine was matured in French barriques for about 15 months before racking. While the base wine has always been Shiraz, each year Dean has blended in a small proportion of Mourvedre with the Shiraz, which accentuates the fruit and delivers greater complexity.

The colour of the 2006 Ned & Henry's is deep red with a purple hue. The aroma is distinctively Barossa Valley: dark, ripe fruits with a solid, concentrated core. The French oak and ripe fruit are interwoven with pepper, nutmeg and cloves. The seamless class of perfectly ripe fruit and French oak is a stand-out. The palate structure delivers in every aspect; the fruit flavours are full and concentrated yet soft and supple. The tannins are gentle yet persistent and completely integrated. Ned & Henry's is most definitely full-bodied: chocolate, blackberry and dark-earth characters. The wine has great balance and carries that signature called 'drink-ability'.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking very well now - and will mature gracefully over the next 3-5 years.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
Perfect match with prime fillet, stewed venison and seasonal roasted vegetables.
