Grape Variety: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon; 20% Merlot
Growing Region: Maraekakaho Road, Tuki Tuki Valley, Hawke's Bay
Chief Winemaker: Peter Robertson
TASTING NOTE:
A hand picked wine, something quite rare today; this gives you a clue to the care and attention that is given to this icon wine. Merlot arrived at the winery on the 16th April and equally the handpicked Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on the 21st April.
Fermentation immediately followed as each parcel arrived, at temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. After three weeks of maceration, the wine was pressed, and was subsequently aged in new French oak barriques. Here the wine remained for 18 months.
The colour of this wine is a magnificently compelling dense blackberry. The 2006 Gold Label Cabernet Merlot is a celestial experience. Fragrant cassis and wild blackberry generate a heavenly bouquet. Enriched berry, spice and leather form a galaxy of layered flavours on the mid palate. Ripeness of fruit and time in new oak are its stellar components.
When you ultimately pass through the Pearly Gates, don't be surprised when St. Peter greets you with the 2006 Gold Label. It might be some time away, but be assured the Gold Label will have aged magnificently in the interim. This vintage celebrates twenty years of the 'Gold Label'.
CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Decant for 30+ minutes to drink now, or age for another 15+ years and enjoy.
SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
This wine pairs well with prime beef and lamb infused with slithers of garlic, trust me.
Setting the standard for over 25 years.
