Wine of the Week
Kaesler Stonehorse GSM 2006
13 May 2008

Grape Variety: 45% Grenache, 44% Shiraz, 11% Mourvedre

Growing Region: Barossa, South Australia

Chief Winemaker: Reid Bosward

TASTING NOTE:
The "Stonehorse" wines are vinified to make styles that emphasise the natural, ripe fruit characters of the Barossa with complementary barrel maturation. The oak is designed to support and add structure to the palate without compromising the drink-ability of the wine. This wine has spent 12 months in predominantly older oak and has been bottled without fining or filtration. The Grenache component contributes soft aromatics and flavours, the Shiraz gives palate spine and a touch of spice and the Mourvedre provides breadth and depth. The vines for this blend come from estate plantings ranging from 20 - 45 years old.

The wine is a bright garnet in colour with a youthful edge. On the nose you have ripe berries, with spicy savoury overtones. On the front palate you have mulberries, blackberries and plum fruit characters with fine tannin and fresh acidity. As the wine moves through the palate, the mouth feel widens and becomes quite savoury. The palate is rich and smooth with good length. The aftertaste is very Mourvedre, with a strong flavour of dark chocolate - with a subtle well balanced hint of oak holding everything together and giving a lingering finish.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking well now, plus will age for another 4-5 years with careful cellaring.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
This wine pairs well with rack of lamb, roast pork, slowly cooked duck and winter vegetables.
