Wine of the Week
Mont Redon Chateauneuf Du Pape 2004
11 March 2008

Grape Variety: 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 5% Mourvedre and 5% blend of Counoise, Muscardin & Vaccarese.

Growing Region: Left bank of the Rhone River, between Orange & Avignon.

Winemaker: Christian Voeux

TASTING NOTE:

Famed for its use of all 13 Chateauneuf grape varieties, Mont-Redon is also one of the great estates of the region. All of their grapes are hand picked, which yes takes time, but also ensures only the best fruit is selected. Another attention to detail is the hand plunging of the cap for about two to three weeks to extract the right balance of tannins and colour, then the wine was aged for eighteen months before Estate bottling.

Its colour is a deep ruby red. The opulent fruit aromas are enhanced with spicy and smoky notes which, in turn, evolve into a delicate bouquet. Similarly, on the palate, the powerful young fruit has rich, toasty flavours which are developing into a wine of considerable finesse and elegance. At every stage on the palate, the tannins remain present and complex, which ensures that the wine has good ageing potential.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:

Approachable now but will open up even more over the next 3-4 years.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:

Perfect with pork, lamb and seasonal vegetables, with a herb and wine jus.
