Wine of the Week
Waipara Hills Unoaked Chardonnay 2006
26 February 2008

Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay

Growing Region: Marlborough

Chief Winemaker: Simon McGeorge

TASTING NOTE:

They say it's the simple things that taste so good; well it's no truer than in this delicious unoaked Chardonnay from Waipara Hills. The grapes for this wine were selected from two different vineyard sites within the Marlborough region to enhance and add complexity to the blend. The fruit was harvested at optimum ripeness, and carefully transported to the winery for pressing. After settling, each batch of juice was cool fermented separately in stainless steel tanks to retain maximum fruit freshness. After fermentation, about 50% of the juice for this wine underwent malolactic fermentation to soften the natural acidity, and then the wines were carefully blended and prepared for bottling.

The wine has a pale gold colour. On the nose aromas of white peach and honeysuckle with subtle notes of grapefruit and spice. A medium-bodied Chardonnay with a soft round palate and flavours of ripe peach and grapefruit supported by stone fruit and subtle hints of spice carry through. The mouth feel is elegant and youthful with a pleasing acidity that leads to a warm lingering finish.

Drinking very well now or cellar carefully for another 3+ years.
