Wine of the Week
Lake Chalice 'Eyrie' Pinot Gris 2007
19 February 2008

Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Gris

Growing Region: Eyrie Vineyard, Marlborough

Chief Winemaker: Matt Thomson

TASTING NOTE:

Mother-Nature gave many parts of Marlborough a cool start to the growing season. But things did improve and a good ripening period in autumn allowed picking at optimum ripeness and flavours. Their own 'Eyrie Vineyard' in the Waihopai Valley supplied 82% of the fruit for this wine. With the balance coming from two vineyards in the Rapaura district.

The ripe Pinot Gris grapes were crushed and pressed immediately after harvest. With carefull, temperature controlled fermentation retaining the wine's lifted aromas and fruit driven palate. The wine has a bright, very pale straw colour, with a nose and aromas of pears and bread crust. On the palate there are subtle spicy hints and a long, lingering finish.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:

Drinking very well now or cellar carefully for another 4-5 years.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:

Perfect either as an aperitif or with crayfish cooked on the BBQ served with buttered crusty bread and a fresh green salad.
