Kaesler 'Stonehorse' Shiraz 2012

TASTING NOTE:
The name Stonehorse comes from the Clydesdale horses that used to work the heavy clay soils at Kaesler, long before tractors arrived. During the growing season the vines had crop thinning to control yields and maximize berry flavours. Each of the hand harvested blocks are kept separate until final blending.

As the fruit arrived into the winery, each parcel was fermented with live yeast for a healthy ferment. The juice had skin contact for about 9 days with the cap being pumped over twice a day. After fermentation it was pressed off and let to rest for one day then placed into oak barrels. Following malolactic fermentation the wine was racked off its lees and then returned to new and used barrels for 15 months. Which has given the wine nice oak notes: while still allowing the fruit to express itself. Bottled with only a light filtration.

This 2012 Stonehorse Shiraz is full of character - as you pour into your glass you will be greeted by an inky rich red colour with a dark core and crimson edge. On the nose you have vibrant dark fruits and wild forest berries along with hints of dried spice.

The palate is youthful - though already showing supple and even elegant characteristics and friendly tannins in the mouth. The wine is full of blackberry and blueberry flavours, added with lighter red fruits such as cherries. Plus due to the ample time in oak the wines natural spicy notes and ripe fruits are well supported, giving the wine a lengthy finish. Decant for 30-45 minutes and serve at 16-18C.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Approachable this coming season; though will repay cellaring for another 7-8 years.

Perfect wine match with bbq'd meats, sausages, tapas and pizza, enjoy.
