Bastille Day

Celebrated on the 14th of July, Bastille Day is the French National Day and commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on that same date back in 1789. An event that would prove to become a major catalyst in the unfolding French Revolution and the downfall of their monarchy.

The Bastille was a fortress in Paris which was used as a state prison by the Kings of France. The people of Paris stormed the fortress on the 14th of July 1789 in search of ammunition and gunpowder, as they feared attack from the Royal Army or Foreign Regiments of Mercenaries.

The celebrations on Bastille Day pay homage to the freedoms achieved by the populace of France during the French Revolution and the nation's move from an Absolute Monarchy to a Republic.
