10 Fast Facts About Bourbon:

1. Bouron does not need to be made in Kentucky. However it must be made within the United States of America.

2. 51% of the Whiskey's grain bill must be Corn. The rest can be any mixture of Barely, Rye or Wheat with the various blends leading to each brands distinct 'house' style.

3. Bourbon can only be aged in casks of White American Oak, which are first fill. They cannot be reused for the production of Bourbon once emptied.

4. There are more barrels of Bourbon aging in Kentucky than people.

5. During World War II, many Bourbon distilleries were repurposed to help the cause, producing much needed Penicillin, which is also a product of fermentation.

6. 90% of America's Disco Balls are made within the state boundaries of Kentucky.

7. Because Bourbon barrels can only be filled once, when emptied they are often shipped to other whisky / whiskey producting nations. Many Scotch Whiskies or Single Malts are matured in predominately Bourbon Casks.

8. Nothing can be added to Bourbon during or following the distillation process other than water. This means that all colour and flavour change occurs during the aging and maturation process.

9. By law, Bourbon must be aged in barrel for a minimum of 2 years. During this time evaporation occurs, this is known as the "Angels Share"

10. During production, Jack Daniel's follows each and every rule required for it to be named as a Bourbon. However, before entering the barrel for aging they add an extra step called "Charcoal Mellowing", which makes it a Tennessee Whiskey.
