10 Gin Facts:

1. While sailors in the British Navy were given a daily ration of rum, their Naval Officers were instead given a daily ration of gin.

2. To be classified as a Gin, the spirits predominant flavour must be of Juniper.

3. There was once a working gin still in one of every four habitable structures in London.

4. The martini glass only received that name in the 1990's, when martini style cocktails became the fashionable drink of choice. Before this, it was simply know as a 'cocktail glass'.

5. A London Dry Gin does not have to be made in the city of London.

6. The philippines consumes more gin per capital than any other nation.

7. A large number of the classic gin cocktails were made to mask the low quality liquor, often produced at home during prohibition times.

8. Gin, and its Quinine Tonic were used to stave off malaria. The tonic would help ward off the parasite, whilst the Gin was used to make it palatable.

9. The Juniper used in the production of gin is wild, not cultivated or famed.

10. Gin's predecessor, the dutch "Jenever", was the source of the famous term "Dutch Courage", as dutch soldiers would drink it to boost morale before entering battle.
