Wine of the Week
Reynella 'Basket Press' Shiraz 2010
23 March 2015

Grape Variety: 100% Shiraz

Growing Region: McLaren Vale, Australia

Chief Winemaker: Neville Rowe

TASTING NOTE:
This celebrated producer, formerly known as Chateau Reynella was established in 1838. Founded by John Reynell, a pioneer who planted the first vines in the area over 175 years ago. Today with new ownership, it still stands strong, producing first-class McLaren Vale reds guided by the experienced hand of Neville Rowe.

Fashioned from small parcels; open-fermenters are used in their state of the art McLaren Vale winery, and then 'basket-pressed' in the 100-year-old press. Matured in American and French oak barriques; before a final blending after 16 months.

Reynella's 'Basket Pressed' Shiraz is a classic style McLaren Vale Shiraz. A benchmark expression of what McLaren Vale wines aspire.

In the glass you have a deep magenta core and a rich red hue. The nose is intense, with vibrant luscious McLaren Vale Shiraz qualities, with an incredible purity of primary fruit aromas of dark plums, blueberries, small wild berries with bitter dark chocolate and dried spices, interwoven with silky oak notes which carry through onto the palate.

The palate is defined by an intensity of dark berry fruits, bitter chocolate, firm tannins, lively oak and spice characters which results in a wine with incredible complexity. The balanced use of oak adds a wonderful textural mouth feel and providing a confident structure; while all of these qualities are the foundation for a distinguished and persistent finish. Decant for 45-60 minutes and serve at 17-18C.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Approachable now with decanting; though will appreciate and repay another 7-8 years.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
Perfect wine pairing with grilled scotch fillet, well seasoned red meats and rich, earthy meat pasta dishes, enjoy.

An iconic Shiraz, of the Australian industry.
