Wine of the Week
Fontanafredda 'Langhe' DOC Arneis 2013
19 January 2015

Grape Variety: 100% Arneis

Growing Regions: Langhe & Roero, Italy

Chef Winemaker: Danilo Drocco

TASTING NOTE:
The fruit for this wine is sourced from vineyards located in the traditional DOC areas of Piedmont. The vineyard team led by Danilo; focus upon and achieve consistent quality of their grapes. The majority of the fruit for this wine is owned by the company, with small parcels supplied by long term growers, who traditionally sell their entire crop to Fontanafredda.

When the fruit was deemed ripe in late September, the harvested grapes were taken to the winery in boxes and immediately underwent a soft pressing, with separation of the free-run juice from the grape skins. The 'must' was then transferred into temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, where after chilling and static racking; it was fermented at a temperature of 18C.

At the end of the fermentation, the wine was stored at 5C to prevent any malolactic fermentation. The wine was then allowed to develop in stainless steel tanks for 4-5 months at cool temperatures, left on its fine lees to increase its aromatic complexity, texture and flavours on the palate. The wine was then cold stabilized, and bottled for 2-3 months before release the following summer.

In the glass you have an bright straw-yellow colour with greenish highlights. On the nose, the bouquet has exotic white flesh fruits, ripe apples, sweet pears, wild blossom and white honey. The palate is vibrant, with fresh citrus characters producing a lifted mouth-feel, and resulting in a crispy, fresh and lingering finish. Chill and serve at 8-10C.
