Wine of the Week
Cooper's Creek 'Bell Ringer' Albarino 2014
10 November 2014

Grape Variety: 100% Albarino

Growing Region: Gisborne, New Zealand

Chief Winemaker: Simon Nunns

TASTING NOTE:
The grape varietal Albarino originates from the north-west wine region of Spain and Northern Portugal - where it is called Alvarinho. Its given quirky wine name comes from Simon's impression that it tastes and smells as pure as the peal of a bell. Also because it was grown by Doug and Delwyn Bell with their vineyard located a short distance from Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island.

The 2014 vintage in Gisborne was a mixed bag, though ended well and they were able to harvest the grapes with quality characters. To retain varietal freshness in the finished wine the hand-picked fruit was tank fermented and whole bunch pressed, giving the juice a great deep of character and flavour. Simon's winemaking choices and influence were controlled and minimal and all designed to preserve as much purity as possible in the finished wine. With this varietal freshness in mind, Simon only used the 'free run' juice from each pressing to craft this lively wine.

In the glass this wine has a pale straw colour, with light green highlights. On the nose the wine has pure and fresh citrus fruit aromatics, with hints of peach and white floral notes. On the palate the wine is deceivingly medium bodied and typically zesty. This wine has a brilliant natural citrus acid heart resulting in the palate having excellent length and the cleansing finish. Chill and serve at 8-9C.
