Wine of the Week
Hewitson 'Miss Harry' GSM 2012
20 October 2014

Grape Variety: 61% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, 15% Mourvedre, 2% Cinsault & 2% Carignan

Growing Region: Barossa Valley, Australia

Owner / Chief Winemaker: Dean Hewitson

TASTING NOTE:
After traditional vinification the wine was matured in seasoned French oak barriques for 12 months without racking. During this period the barrels experienced their innovative and intensive hands-on method of batonnage (lees stirring). Where they mix, re-suspend the fermentation lees with new wine; by rotating the oak barrels on small wheels built into the racking system. This method serves to intensify the wines flavour and complexity and provide Deans team with greater control over the maturation process, and improving the quality of the finished wine.

The 2012 'Miss Harry' continues in the foot-steps of previous vintages, presenting a well structured wine, with upfront ripe berry fruits which delivers a friendly, approachable wine with integrity, charm, character and layers of flavour resulting in an early drinking style red wine.

In the glass you have a bright red colour with a deep purple hue. On the nose aromas of dark plums and a mix of red and black wild berries, pepper, spice, subtle earthy notes, lavender and dried herbs with layers of character provided by the extended time on its own lees and in oak barrels. The palate is wonderfully inviting, delivering ripe dark fruits, and has a confident core of fruit flavours with balanced natural acidity that offers a bright, lifted mouth-feel, giving the wine a lingering, smooth finish. Minimal decanting required and serve at 16-18C.
