Grape Variety: Grenache, Tempranillo, Mataro and Shiraz
Growing Region: Clare Valley, Australia
Owner / Winemaker: Tim Adams
TASTING NOTE:
The Fergus - is a blended red wine named after Tim's neighbour who was good enough to sell him his Grenache grapes in 1999, during a dramatic shortage of Shiraz and Cabernet that vintage. After blending this wine for the first time, Tim realised that a wine born had real appeal, with a rounded soft palate and immediate food versatility.
The Grenache fruit was left in the vineyard until it was fully mature, and then was crushed on to fermented and drained skins of Shiraz and Mataro. Fermentation took place on the grape skins for approximately one week. Stainless steel tanks were then topped and closed for 7 days preceded by pressing and then oak maturation for 18 months.
This 2009 vintage consists of Grenache, Tempranillo, Mataro and Shiraz principally from the vineyards of the Mahon and Clark families and Tim's own. A significant amount of Tempranillo has been blended for complexity and its medium palate intensity. The wines were then racked several times before filtration and then transferred into used American oak and remained in oak until blending and bottling.
In the glass you have a deep dark red colour. On the nose this wine has lifted berry aromas with subtle spicy notes. The fruit driven palate, has added complexity with lifted spiciness and extra palate length through the blending of other more structured red grapes. This wine with its mouth-filling ripe berry flavours and fine tannins makes this wine ready for any occasion. Serve at 16-18C.
