Wine of the Week
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio 2012
16 December 2013

Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Grigio

Growing Region: Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Chief Winemaker: Massimiliano Luison

TASTING NOTE:
In 1961, Santa Margherita's had the inspired idea of applying traditional sparkling white winemaking techniques to the pink-hued Pinot Grigio grapes of Trentino - Alto Adige. They immediately separated the skins from the must in the pressing phase and thus preventing them the typical hint of colour. Thus creating this innovative white wine with its characteristic fresh, fragrant bouquet and vibrant taste, creating a revolution for the region and wine style.

Ever since, it has continued to gain popularity and accolades both in Italy and the world over, maintaining its position as the benchmark by which all other Italian D.O.C. Pinot Grigio's are judged.

After the carefully selected fruit arrives in the winery and following a soft pressing, the must fermented for approx 10-15 days at 18C. Once the fermentation was complete, the wine was stored at a controlled temperature of 15-16C in stainless steel tanks until time for bottling.

The glass you are greeted by a luminous straw, yellow colour. On the nose the wine is bright, with intense aromas and green apples and citrus notes. These characters carry through onto the palate accompanied by Golden Delicious apples and a subtle mineral note - making this Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio a wine of great personality and versatility. Chill and serve at 8-10C.
