Wine of the Week
Akarua 'Vintage' Brut 2010
02 December 2013

Grape Variety: 54% Pinot Noir, 46% Chardonnay

Growing Region: Central Otago, New Zealand

Head Winemaker: Matt Connell

TASTING NOTE:
The finest expression of Methode Traditionnelle wines are a blend of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes - Central Otago and more importantly Akarua definitely have both, sourced from dramatically diverse vineyards sites to produce this world class sparkling wine.

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit was chosen from several selected blocks on the Akarua Estate - which were hand harvested and then whole bunch pressed, with each parcel kept separate. The juice was then settled and racked for yeast fermentation in old oak barrels. A selection of the finest base wines of the 2010 harvest was made to produce this vintage brut blend with a strong backbone and character. The blended base wine was then transferred to bottle to undergo secondary fermentation in the bottle for a minimum of 36 months on yeast less before 'riddling' and disgorgement.

In the glass you have medium-small sized bubbles with a golden glow. On the nose the strong Pinot Noir red fruit and savoury aromas are complemented by toast and dried nut notes. The aromas follow onto the palate with powerful creamy flavours that linger and then lead to a bright, crisp brut style finish. Chill and serve at 8C.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking perfectly well this summer season; and will hold its personality for 2-3 years.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
Perfect wine match as an aperitif, with shellfish, or steamed white fish on risotto, enjoy.

An exciting new sparkling wine for Akarua.
