Cocktail of the Week
Tokyo Bloody Mary
24 November 2009

The traditional rice wine of Japan, Sake is a naturally fermented alcoholic beverage made with rice and water. Sake was first made at least 2000 years ago and since then has played an important role in Japanese culture and history. Like nutrition or a good laugh, sake, when enjoyed in an appropriate amount, was believed to maintain health and promote well-being. I've done a take on this classic cocktail by using Gekkeikan Sake instead of the usual vodka. Bloody Marys are a great pick me up drink - it must have something to do with the high antioxidant levels in it. The savoury notes in the sake blend perfectly with the tomato juice, while the port adds an underlying tartness. So next time you can't decide what to drink, why not try this, and while I'm not one to promote excess - it is also a great hangover cure!

INGREDIENTS:
60ml Gekkeikan Sake

100ml Tomato Juice

15ml Fresh Lemon Juice

Dash of Quinta De La Rosa Tawny Port

7 drops of Tobasco Sauce

3 dashes of Worcestershire Sauce

1 pinch of Celery Salt

1 grind of Black Pepper

METHOD:
Add tomato juice to an ice filled tall glass, grind pepper over the top and add the remaining ingredients. Stir together gently (shaking causes the drink to bubble).

GARNISH:
Garnish with a Lemon Grass stalk.
