GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Syrah
GROWING REGION: Hawkes Bay
HEAD WINEMAKER: Denis Gunn
TASTING NOTE:
Denis Gunn's winemaking (and drinking) philosophy is simple: "Wine is a drink to make you feel good, so if you like it, drink it. Consumers don't need to get bogged down with the technical aspects of wine - that's our job. We focus on creating an enjoyable experience for anyone who buys into our dream".
This Syrah honours the SS Silistria which, in 1862, brought a young William Gunn to New Zealand. Hand harvested fruit was small batch fermented and then aged in French oak barriques for 12 months. It is a wine with great strength of varietal character, finesse and, above all, a rich velvety texture, mingling with forest floor nuances. Rich, dark fruit flavours of prunes and ripe berries are followed by a gamey and complex aftertaste of lingering spices and fine tannins. The finish is velvety and smooth sailing.
