Wine of the Week
Waipara Hills 'Waipara' Chardonnay 2008
08 September 2009

Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay

Growing Region: Waipara, New Zealand

Consultant Winemaker: Simon McGeorge

TASTING NOTE:
I love a wine that speaks to you with clarity and confidence. This youthful but sound wine does just that. It shows excellent varietal character which is becoming rare these days, and shows with pride its unique regional influences with all the confidence that it is rightly proud of.

This wine is made by Simon McGeorge - head winemaker at Waipara Hills who is responsible for all wine making duties. Simon is a local Canterbury lad, and after learning his craft around the place he is very excited to be at Waipara Hills and his wines show this enthusiasm.

All the fruit for this wine came from the Glasnevin Vineyard, in behind the winery in Waipara. Cooler conditions and some heavy rain meant plenty of work bringing in the fruit all at once, but the stable and warm summer produced great flavours and aromatics. The wine was 100% matured in older oak barrels, with no malolactic fermentation.

In the glass the wine has is a pale yellow with hints of green. The nose has aromas of melon flavours that run through to the palate. The palate has fresh apple and melon flavours and with a hint of butterscotch. Moderate weight and a beautiful texture to this wine, with a clean finish.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking perfectly well this coming summer; and over the next 2-3 years.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
Perfect wine match with chicken dishes like pasta and a subtle creamy sauce, enjoy.

A Chardonnay that is ready to be shared with friends .
