Wine of the Week
Ti Point 'One' Merlot 2005
08 May 2007

GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Merlot

GROWING REGION: Matakana Coast

HEAD WINEMAKER: Tracy Haslam

TASTING NOTE:

Only the finest Bordeaux red clones are planted at Ti Point Vineyard, on a north-facing slope in the rain shadow of the Whangiripo range, blessed with a constant, gentle sea breeze. Sounds like the perfect place to plant and grow red grapes and the hot, dry summer of 2005 was just that for this particular wine.

Small batches of hand picked grapes were hand-plunged to ensure good extraction during fermentation and then they were transferred to a traditional basket press. Aged, with minimal handling, in new French oak barrels to create a style of wine that is rich, smooth and meaty.

Deep purple in the glass, with a lifted scented aroma or ripe red berry fruits and floral nuances. The palate is full and sweet with vanilla, ripe berry fruits and a very seductive soft mouth feel. A wine with good fruit weight and depth, well balanced with smooth tannins and immense appeal, the finish is alluring, smooth, voluptuous and layered with flavour, it is hard to say no to a second glass.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:

Drinking now, but will reward another 3-4 years in the bottle.

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:

Roasted 'Bresse' Chicken and season vegetables, enjoy.
