Grape Variety: 100% Barbera
Growing Region: Alba, Piedmont, Italy
Chief Winemaker: Danilo Drocco
TASTING NOTE:
I had the pleasure of visiting Fontanafredda in September of this year. Fontanafredda is at the heart of the Italian wine history and culture - the rolling hills, the small villages, the vineyards, the cellars and the tradition. But it was the understanding of how best to blend new thinking, technology and the unique expression that they achieve from these ancient grapes that are only found in the surrounding villages that has left such a positive impression.
Barbera is a red grape and a wine style that can only be truly understood when matched with the right cuisine. I know that this can be a throw away statement trying to justify a style of wine that needs a little more thought and attention, but it is so true when tasting Italian wines outside of Italy.
The wine is ruby red with subtle purple tones. This wine has a brilliant bouquet; quite broad, intense and persistent, with hints of blackberry and ripe raspberry and a hint of mild oak.
On the palate it is slightly dry but soft, warm notes, summer fruits, full, with a persistent finish.
CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking now and will keep for at least another 4-5 years.
SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
Perfect match for pasta with a rich tomato based sauce, herbs and wild mushrooms.
