Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay
Growing Region: Epernay, France
Chief Winemaker: Dominique Petit
TASTING NOTE:
This 2002 'Blanc de Blancs' is vinified from 100% Chardonnay grapes selected from Grand Cru vineyards, which are predominantly owned by Pol Roger in the Cote de Blancs region. The wine is then matured for 9 years before being released onto the market.
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks kept to temperatures not exceeding 18C, with each village kept separate until final blending, with the wine undergoing full malolactic fermentation. Secondary Fermentation occurs in the lowest Pol Roger cellars where the wine is kept until it undergoes remuage (riddling) by hand. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars.
In the flute you will be greeted by dazzling crystalline pale gold colour with a greenish shimmer. The tiny bubbles create an abundance and persistent foam in the glass. On the nose you will find the wine dominated by hints of citrus fruits, revealing the elegance, subtlety and balance of the wine. You can also find subtle notes of stone fruits, quince and white flowers.
On the palate, the texture if fresh with a confident mineral character providing a powerful structure. The primary citrus accents and toasty notes mingle to reveal a wonderful balance and a graceful harmony, with background nuances of brioche, green apple and pear. A lovely complexity all wrapped in a dry finish that has a remarkable length and elegance. Chill and serve at 8-10C.
