Grape Variety: 100% Gewurztraminer
Growing Region: Gisborne, New Zealand
Owners: Kirsten & Richard Searle
TASTING NOTE:
Matawhero Wines was established in Gisborne by Bill Irwin in 1968, defying convention of the time and crafting boutique wine with international acclaim - changing the face of New Zealand winemaking forever. Following in Bill's pioneering footsteps and the first vintage in 1975, his son Denis imparted his own colourful style and won fame for his Gewurztraminer - which everyone was enjoying, even the Queen in England.
The fruit was sourced from the Searle vineyard on the Patutahi plateau in Gisborne. In the cool of the day - the grapes were machine harvested and quickly taken to the winery. The juice was cool fermented, using a selected aromatic yeast. The fermentation was stopped when the wine was decided to be in balance and retaining all of its natural tropical flavour. The wine was then stabilised, filtered, bottled, labeled and rested before release.
In the glass you are greeted by a pale gold colour with hints of green. On the nose the wine is showing aromatic notes of, Turkish-delight, rose petal, clove and star anise. The palate is bright and fruit driven in style, rich and full with fresh lychee, Turkish-Delight and subtle hints of spice and ginger. The wine has a pleasingly long finish, which will compliment many varied & flavoursome cuisine choices. Chill and serve at 8C.
