What is Pinotage?
02 August 2016

With the name “Pinotage” many people have been -understandably so - fooled into believing the wines from this grape variety taste similar to Pinot. In truth, this grape creates a wine much more similar to Shiraz.

Made by cross-breeding Pinot Noir and Cinsaut grape vines back in 1925 in South Africa, the aim was to create a grape variety producing the flavour profile of Pinot Noir, with the ease of grow that Cinsaut provided. This however was not the result they were provided.

The result was instead a grape that was extremely dark in colour, which produced a bold wine, with strong tannins. Common flavour descriptions include: Tobacco, Blackberry, Plum, Liquorice and Rooibos Tea.
