The Cosmopolitan is certainly one of the most popular cocktail of our time and like many great drinks the origins are not 100% clear. There are unsubstantiated rumours that a woman named Cheryl Cook invented it in South Beach, Miami, though even Dale DeGroff is credited with its creation.
Dale did not invent it but he certainly helped popularise a definitive recipe that became the standard. The drink first appeared in San Francisco and New York cocktail bars in the late 1980's.
